becoming a member
At the Conifer church of Christ, becoming a member is not regulated by us, but by God. In Acts 2:47 it says, “And the Lord was adding to their number day by day, those who were being saved.” As this verse reveals, you don’t join the church, but rather God adds you to the church.
Becoming a member here is simple: do what God has asked you to do in order to be saved, and God will add you to His church. There are a number of Bible verses that reveal what a person must do to become of member of Christ’s church:
Hear the Gospel Message — contained in the pages of the Bible is a message called “the Gospel.” The word gospel simply means good news. This message is the good news about how God offers salvation from sins for all of mankind. The Bible says that faith comes from hearing that gospel message (Romans 10:17). In order for a person to come to faith in Jesus, they must first hear this gospel message about God’s offer of salvation through Jesus (Romans 10:14).
Put your faith in Jesus for your salvation — the Bible teaches that a person must not trust in anyone or anything other than Jesus Christ for their salvation. Putting your faith in Jesus means trusting in His sacrifice for your salvation, as opposed to trusting in your own good works (Ephesians 2:8-9). A person must believe in who Jesus is, the Son of God, and trust in His sacrifice to save them.
Repent of your sins — the Bible teaches that all have sinned (Romans 3:23). God requires everyone to repent of their sins in order to be saved (Acts 2:38). Repentance is a change in mind that leads to a change in action. God wants you to turn from your sins and start following Jesus and His teachings.
Confess Jesus as Lord — the Bible teaches that everyone must confess Jesus as their Lord in order to be saved (Romans 10:9). Confessing Jesus as Lord is a verbal commitment to follow Jesus as your King for the rest of your life. It is a pledge of your allegiance to King Jesus (1 Timothy 5:12). Not only is confession this verbal commitment to follow Christ, it is an acknowledgment that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He came to save your soul (Matthew 16:15-16).
Be Baptized — the Bible teaches that a person must be baptized in order to be forgiven of their sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21). Baptism is the intersection of faith and obedience. It is trusting in the redemptive work of Jesus, and obeying the commands of God for salvation (Colossians 2:12). Being baptized is also a reenactment of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. We crucify our old sinful selves just as Jesus was crucified. We are buried in water just as Jesus was buried. We are raised to walk in a new way of life just as Jesus was raised. (Romans. 6:3-6).
When a person does these things, God adds that person to His church. Acts 2:41 says, “So then, those who had received His word were baptized; and that day there were added about three-thousand souls.” Once you’ve done what God has asked you to do in order to be added to His church, we will gladly open our arms to you in fellowship. Until then, you will be considered a visitor and will be encouraged to do these things to become a part of Christ’s church.
We would love to assist you in building your faith in Jesus, committing to repentance, making the good confession, and being baptized today.
